What Users Are Saying
This boat is outstanding. First, I'm just your normal III boater. And I'm not racing. The normal reviews emphasize this is a race boat. Yes, it is fast, very fast, which is what I like. But it also is a great eddy catching and carving boat. Everybody seems to be raving about the Code, which is definitely a good boat, but I like the Phantom MUCH better. I feel I have more control. And to add to it, the Dagger outfitting is great. Yes, it makes the boat a little heavier but a small negative.
The Dagger Phantom is a tank! This boat will plow through any feature on the river. I love how fast this boat is while still being easy to maneuver. I also enjoy the amount of room the boat provides as the contour outfitting is the most comfortable on the market.
The Dagger Phantom is my go-to boat for any challenging river run where precision is paramount. I appreciate its ability to carry a decent amount of gear in the stern without noticeably compromising its performance in turning, ferrying, or catching eddies. Compared to boats like the Code or Mamba, the Phantom tracks and holds a line better for my body weight, height, and paddling style (175 pounds, 5’ 7”). It's as reliable and tough as nails, holding up to years of abuse in the PNW and BC. While the Phantom sits high in the water, it has less rocker than some other Dagger boats, allowing the medium to have a greater influence on the outcome of a paddler's chosen line. This is also its superpower: once up to speed and moving with intent, it takes serious bad river karma to steer the Phantom off course, compared to hulls with more planning surface and higher rocker. Overall, I'd give the Phantom a 10/10. It's a fantastic boat for shredding any river.
Having paddled all the 9ft race boats, this one seems to always end up on the water. Plenty of rocker to carry you over holes and a flat stern to skip you out of drops. I have raced multiple green races in the phantom and also use it as my mank boat. Compared to the code, I prefer the fast flowy style of paddling this boat provides. They both paddle similar, the code will take care of your mistakes a bit more, but the phantom rewards good technique much much more.
This boat makes hot laps on the home run a dream! Plenty of rocker to stay dry, plenty of speed to go fast , and lots of volume to keep you safe. That volume also helps with overnighters too, allowing you to fit all you need for the ultimate camp life. Outfitting is super comfortable, making it a boat I like to be in all day. Quality kayak!
The Phantom is a creekboat with modern bow rocker, but is a little faster than your average modern creeker. It overnights really well loaded down, is a great race boat, and operates with strength on rocky, manky creeks, where edgier boats can get a little unruly. Highly recommended!
The Phantom is Daggers high speed, flowy, dynamic speed creeker. The boat is forgiving, ultra responsive, and fast allowing huge skips out of drops and over holes. A wide weight range makes this boat forgiving to pack for overnighters with the extra weight as well!
I love the dagger phantom as a Fast creek with modern bow rocker. It’s the best of both worlds between a planning hall and displacement hall creek boat.
Absolutely loved taking the phantom out west this summer. The perfect mix of fast and reliable even when loaded with days worth of gear!
