Overview

The Akiak is the first modern shoulderless Greenland paddle with exchangeable tips. Inspired by the Inuit tradition of strengthening paddle tips with bone, walrus ivory, and harder wood, Akiak integrates durable polyamide tips with a carbon fiber paddle. The tip unites smoothly with the paddle to form a seamless paddle stroke.
Greenland style paddle blades make contact with the water covering roughly the same surface area as Euro-blades, but the even distribution results in a smoother stroke and more control in the water. The narrow blade also creates less resistance in the air, allowing paddlers to explore further with less physical strain. Gearlab’s signature ProTek tip design bolsters the ends of the paddle with an easily replaceable tip made from a durable polyamide material. This provides confidence in rocky or shallow waters, and the option to customize a paddle with colored tips.

What Users Are Saying

The shaft is slightly thicker than usual, so I could grip it loosely. This improved comfort, and I imagine it would noticeably reduce wear and tear on arms and hands during long paddles. Think of it as a great excuse to spend more time on the open water. Casual paddlers will certainly appreciate it.

Great paddle! I have been using Greenland paddles for 13 years and started withe a custom laminated cedar one piece. But because I also travel using folding kayaks I needed a break down paddle so I could pack for airline travel, which is not practical with a one piece 84" paddle! I ordered an Akiak several years agp when they first came out with the model because it has the same design as my beloved wood GP, shoulderless with curved tips. As it turned out, the Akiak has the same overall and swing weight the wood paddle and performs just as well on the water. The replaceable tips are a plus (they send you a set with the paddle). Very pleased with this paddle and would recommend it to anyone in search of a two piece GP.
